Kristian Venäläinen

Kristian Venäläinen has worked as a designer, sculptor, ceramist, professor and dean in his more than 25-year career, both in Finland and abroad. He currently lives and works at the Järvilinna Art Center in Laukaa. In recent years, he has focused on sculpture, using ceramics as his main material, but he often combines materials in his sculptures. The themes of the sculptures vary from abstract three-dimensional compositions to large, human-sized sculptures. Sometimes the sculptures take a stand for the oppressed, sometimes they reflect humanity with a humorous touch. Interaction with the viewer is desirable, which is influenced by the viewer’s own perspective and world of experience, both the viewer and the creator. Understanding and respecting the material is essential in his work – feeling it with your hands while working.
