Job description

Wärtsilä is an innovative technology company known for being a forerunner in the Marine and Energy markets. Every day, we – Wärtsilians – put our hearts and minds into turning Wärtsilä’s purpose of enabling sustainable societies through innovation in technology and services into reality. Our ultimate aim is to provide increased value to both our customers and society. New, game-changing ideas and continuous improvement have been part of our DNA since 1834. Together, we can create new business opportunities and more sustainable future that we can all be proud of.

We want to transition the world towards a decarbonised and sustainable future. By pushing the boundaries of engineering and technology, we can make it work. We are always on the lookout for future-oriented talent – want to join the ride?

Join Wärtsilä’s Voyage Services and embark on an exciting journey as a Senior Product Designer with our innovative team. Here you’ll play a pivotal role in shaping the future of decarbonising the maritime industry via our innovative software solutions. We want to change the course towards an interconnected and cleaner maritime future. Are you ready to jump on board and create a better future for our planet?

What you will be doing:

Your playground includes conducting user research, venturing into the field, mapping customer journeys, and collaboratively crafting service and UX concepts and prototypes. We are not only looking for someone with a proven track record in product design; we seek a trailblazer who can guide technical Research and Development (R&D) work from a design perspective.

Picture yourself collaborating with cross-functional teams and external stakeholders, bridging the gap between design and technical implementation, all while ensuring the seamless integration of cutting-edge solutions. Your skills will be the driving force behind the creation of impactful product experiences that resonate with end-users. One month you could be looking at energy optimisation for a beautiful cruise liner, the next working with our AR & VR Training simulator for a huge cargo ship and the third considering Navigation solutions.

Join us in Helsinki, Finland, and be part of our seasoned Product Excellence team. Let’s shape the future of Wärtsilä’s digital solutions together.

In this position, you will have the responsibility for:

  • Creating prototypes with our customers and in close cooperation with R&D in an Agile and Lean UX fashion
  • Conducting in-depth customer research to understand customer needs, pain points, and behaviors
  • Developing and executing user interviews, surveys, and other research methods to gather relevant insights
  • Champion visual frameworks like journey maps, service blueprints, and ecosystem maps -that help bring clarity to complex challenges in human behaviors, relationships, and workflows
  • Creating and validating UI design and business hypotheses/concepts
  • Coaching other designers and support the organization towards design excellence
  • Bridging communication gaps between design, technical, and business stakeholders
  • Presenting and communicating design concepts and recommendations effectively
  • Requirements for the position:
  • Confidence in leading the design process end-to-end, from collecting product requirements insights to prototyping, delivering high-fidelity designs, and collaborating closely with engineers to implement solutions
  • Passion for the entire product discovery process, including UX research, customer interviews, and close collaboration with product managers to define the product’s future
  • Strong background in design and product experiences
  • Proven experience (typically 5-8+ years) as a service designer, UX designer, or other related design role
  • Ability to teach novices the ins and outs of design
  • Excitement and experience in creating working mock-ups with Figma
  • Demonstrated success in leading, facilitating, and delivering end-to-end design projects and have a portfolio to back this up
  • Engaging communication and presentation skills in English
  • Things considered as a plus:
  • Experience in maritime industry or B2B
  • Scaling design systems
  • Having a portfolio included in your application

That is why we have built an environment that empowers you and everyone around you, and where you can feel safe and cared for. Are you eager to be part of this ambition?

Our team values face-to-face interactions, working together, and regular common lunches. Thus, a certain amount of office time is expected, however, we also value remote focus time. Therefore, we work flexibly in a hybrid model that adapts to both your professional and personal needs.
